Come and try sewing with our new Sewing Teacher, Christine.

Join Christine from 9.30 am - 12.00 noon on Wednesday 15 and Wednesday 22 March for a 5-hour course to learn some basic sewing machine skills. You will make a handbag and learn some handy sewing skills along the way.

Supplies and Equipment

If you have a sewing machine and can bring it along, please do. If you don't and would like to borrow one for the two sessions, please let us know by email or phone.

Location

Classes will be run in the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House Community Room at Barkly Square, Ballarat East.

Day and Time

The two sessions will run from 9.30 am - 12.00 noon on Wednesday 15 and Wednesday 22 March, 2023. 

Dates

Wednesday 15 and Wednesday 22 March (2 weeks).

Cost

This course is run through the State Government's ACFE (Adult and Community Education) program. The 2-week course will cost each participant $30.

Registration

Registration is required as there is a limit of 10 people for this class. Payment can be made online or will be collected at the start of the course. Please contact us to register your space and complete a paper registration form in the first class. Please note a minimum of 7 people will need to register for the class before it can proceed.

Term 2: Sewing for Beginners 

The Ballarat East Neighbourhood House is looking forward to delivering this new class with Christine, who is very experienced with sewing and teaching others.

This class is designed for beginners and anyone new to sewing. Classes are structured to build on new skills learned each week. Don't have a sewing machine? Let us know as we have a limited number we can share with you.

Basic fabric, needles and thread will be available, but feel free to bring your own if you wish.

In this class you can expect to learn:

  • How to use your sewing machine, which needles to use, how to look after your machine, managing tensions and what do do with all of your presser feet
  • How to use your machine's stitches, finish seams, and take up hems
  • Applique techniques that you can use to decorate even the most basic items
  • How to sew darts
  • How to take measurements
  • Basic pattern reading and simple adjustments
  • How to insert a zipper, sew on a button, make a buttonhole, and attach fastenings
  • Plus a tonne of tips and tricks to help improve your sewing

Along with way you will make small projects that can be used to make your own clothes including techniques for making skirts, t shirts, home decor items plus much more.

Classes will be run in the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House Community Room at Barkly Square, Ballarat East.

Classes will run from 12.45 pm - 3.00 pm on Tuesdays during Term 2, 2023. We are currently taking expressions of interest to ensure we have sufficient numbers to proceed with the class.

Tuesdays from 2 May - 20 June (8 weeks).

To register, please contact the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House team. We are available during school term, 9.00 am - 5.00 pm Tuesdays to Fridays.

Conditions of participation

  • Please read the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House Activity Terms and Conditions. You will be asked to agree to these upon registration for this class.
  • All participants in Ballarat East Neighbourhood House activities must follow the current Statewide COVID-Safe principles.
  • If you are feeling unwell and/or have cold/flu symptoms please do not come to the activity.
  • Please sanitise your hands upon entry to and exit from Barkly Square. Hand sanitiser will be available.
  • Keep at least 1.5 metres from other people in the activity.
  • Bring your own drink bottle. A Pot of Courage cafe at Barkly Square will be open if you would like to purchase hot drinks and food.
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes before the activity starts to allow time to complete any paperwork.
  • If you have any injuries or issues which may affect your ability to partipate fully in the activity, please arrive early and discuss with Christine.
  • Turn off your phone/digital devices and store your possessions in the room.
  • A maximum of 10 participants will be able to take part in this activity.
  • Tickets are not transferable.
