Thanks for registering your interest in the upcoming ‘Get your Learners Permit (L’s)’ program.
Here’s a few things you should know.
These sessions are designed to help you register for a VicRoads account, gain an understanding about what is required to get your L’s, learn road rules and regulations, book your Learner Permit test and provide follow up support to help you with your test.
It is not driving lessons. If you already have your Car Learner Permit and want driving lessons, have a look at the Ballarat Foundation's L2P prgram.
1 – Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for a learner permit you must:
• be 16 years of age or older (If you are 16 yet, you need to be 16 by June 2025)
• have a residential address in Victoria
• be medically fit to drive (External link)
• not be disqualified from driving or getting a learner permit
• not be currently subject to a Fines Victoria (External link) licence suspension
• not have any outstanding relicensing requirements (External link) like a Licence Eligibility Order.
2 – What to expect
We will help you with all the paperwork and online forms involved to get your learners permit including creating a VicRoads account and registering you for your learners permit test online or in person. You can bring along your own laptop or ipad to help you, or we can supply you with one to help create the accounts.
You will be required to attend three 2-hour sessions to register, learn the skills required to pass the learners permit test and sign up to complete the test. The tutor will help you with this process.
3 – What time suits you?
We will be conducting the sessions at Barkly Square in Ballarat East.
You will be required to attend three 2-hour sessions.
We’d love you to let us know which time suits you, and we will let you know if we have enough participants for a class at that time.
Monday: 9.30-11.30am
Tuesday: 9.30-11.30am or 5.30-7.30pm
Wednesday: 9.30-11.30am
4 – Language requirements
To help us create a beneficial learning experience for you please let us know if you can undertake the sessions in English or if you require a translator and which language you require a translator in. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you if you would like them to act as a translator.
5 – Proof of Identity
Before VicRoads will provide you with a Learner’s Permit you will need to show some proof of identity. You do not need to show this to enrol in our classes, and we will discuss all this in class and help you with it, but it’s handy to make sure that you have them before you sit for the test.
- one 'Category A' evidence of identity document. Click the link to view all documents, but some you might have include Australian naturalisation or citizenship certificate, ImmiCard issued by the Department of Home Affairs (up to 2 years expired) a Document for Travel to Australia accompanied by supporting documentation issued by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection or the Department of Home Affairs.
- one 'Category B' evidence of identity document. Click the link to view all documents, but some you might have include (e.g. Australian bank statement, student ID or Medicare card)
- evidence of your current address (if your current address isn’t shown on the Category A or B evidence)
- glasses or contact lenses (if required for the eyesight test)
- overseas driver licence (or learner permit) verification documents if applicable.
